The Arts

Music is taught by a specialist music teacher and all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have a music lesson each week. These lessons develop skills and understanding of musical concepts through playing percussion instruments, singing, moving, creating, listening, reading and notating music.

Students in Years 3 and 4 learn the recorder for a term each year.  We also have a choir program for Years 3 and 4, which culminates in the performance of a musical.

Choir is also offered to students in Years 5 and 6, and they perform in school assemblies, for senior citizens concerts and other community events, including the annual combined primary schools concert at the Derwent Entertainment Centre.

Students in Year 5 are given the opportunity to undertake an aural musical test, the results of which are used to guide the membership of the school band. Students who are invited to join the band, along with their parents, understand that this opportunity requires a commitment of two years, a small cost for instrument hire and regular after school practice sessions.   The band program is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn to play an instrument and to be a part of a group of musicians.   The Grade 6 band performs in school assemblies and at community events, such as ANZAC Day.  The Grade 5 and 6 bands take part in the combined schools performance at the Derwent Entertainment Centre at the end of the year.  Students in Years 5 and 6 also have the opportunity to learn guitar and join the rock band.

Other arts areas include visual arts and drama. Drama is taught by the class teachers and supported by specialist teachers in some instances.

Visual art is taught by a specialist art teacher and further supported in the classroom by the class teachers. Each class from Prep to Year 6 receive one specialist art lesson per week experiencing and producing a variety of art works from using pencil, to paint, to clay to metal. The highlight of the visual arts program is our whole school participation in, and celebration of, the Young Archies competition.
